What SAFE CP means on an Audi Virtual Cockpit, and how to read the label on the back

Two things confuse almost every first-time buyer of a used Audi cluster: the words SAFE CP in the middle of the display, and the string of codes on the white label at the back. Both are simple once explained, and both decide whether a cluster will work in your car.
SAFE CP is a lock, not a fault
SAFE CP stands for Component Protection (German: Komponentenschutz). Since model year 2017 every Audi instrument cluster is paired to the gateway of the car it was built into. Power the cluster up in any other car, or on a bench, and it boots, lights the display, shows the dials, and prints SAFE CP in the centre. Speed, warnings, menus and most functions stay locked until the pairing is renewed. A cluster showing SAFE CP is therefore a working cluster with an active lock, which is exactly what you want to see on a 0 km unit that has never been married to a second car.
Component Protection is cleared in an ODIS online session: the diagnostic tool talks to Audi's servers, which check the cluster's identity and release it to the new vehicle. It cannot be cleared offline, with VCDS, OBDeleven or Carista, or by swapping EEPROM contents. Three parties can do it: an Audi dealer in the workshop, an independent with an online ODIS licence, or a remote service like ours that connects through your own VAS 6154-type or VXDIAG interface.
SFD: the second lock on 2020+ cars
Cars built from around model year 2020 (A6, A7, A8, Q7 facelift, Q8 first; then the rest of the range) add SFD, Schutz Fahrzeug Diagnose. SFD protects the coding of control units, including the cluster, with a token that has to be fetched online for every session. A workshop can clear CP and still be unable to code a cluster if it has no SFD access. Before ordering for a 2020+ car, ask your workshop whether it holds both, or tell us the VIN and we confirm what our remote session can do.

When you ask us for a VIN check, photograph this label on your existing cluster. Suffix and SW/HW index together tell us within minutes whether a unit we have will code to your car or whether it needs a software downgrade first.
Mileage on a replacement cluster
The cluster stores the odometer reading and only accepts a higher value. A cluster from a driven donor car keeps that donor's mileage forever; your car will show the higher of the two numbers. A cluster removed from a new car at 0 km simply adopts your car's reading during coding. That is the whole reason 0 km units command a premium over salvage units.
Questions
My new cluster shows SAFE CP. Is it broken?
No. SAFE CP means Component Protection is active because the cluster has not yet been paired to your car. An ODIS online session at a dealer, or our remote session, clears it.
Can VCDS or OBDeleven remove Component Protection?
No. CP release needs Audi's servers. VCDS and OBDeleven can read the fault but cannot clear it.
What is the difference between SW and HW on the label?
SW is the software index the cluster runs; HW is the hardware revision. Coding compatibility depends mostly on SW, connector compatibility on HW.
Does a 0 km cluster stay at 0 km?
No. It adopts your car's mileage when coded. Mileage can only go up, never down.
