The second-generation Q7 (type 4M) launched in 2015 with an analogue cluster that has a 7-inch colour display between the dials as standard, and the 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit as an option tied to MMI navigation plus. The part numbers follow one rule: 4M0 920 7xx for km/h markets, 4M0 920 8xx for mph markets, with the last digit separating analogue from digital and with or without adaptive cruise control.
The pre-facelift number families
| Part number | Cluster | Equipment | Market |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4M0 920 770 x | Analogue dials, 7" colour display | Without adaptive cruise control | km/h |
| 4M0 920 771 x | Analogue dials, 7" colour display | With adaptive cruise / speed limiter | km/h |
| 4M0 920 781 | Analogue, 2016 diesel variant | Seen on 2016 TDI listings | km/h |
| 4M0 920 790 x | Virtual Cockpit 12.3" | A: without ACC / limiter; B, C later | km/h |
| 4M0 920 870 x | Analogue | Without adaptive cruise | mph, North America |
| 4M0 920 880 x | Analogue | With adaptive cruise | mph, North America |
| 4M0 920 890 x | Virtual Cockpit 12.3" | US Premium Plus / Prestige | mph, North America |
US trims help decode which cluster a car has: 2017 Premium and Premium Plus came with the analogue cluster, Virtual Cockpit was optional on Premium Plus and standard on Prestige. In Europe the analogue cluster was standard and Virtual Cockpit an option or part of a pack.

When a Q7 4M cluster fails
Documented failure modes on this platform are complete failure with loss of warning tones and the turn-signal click, display streaks or errors, and gauge or buzzer failure. Specialist repairers in Germany quote from EUR 129 (kfzpix) to EUR 259 (Endera, Bochum) plus diagnosis, and UpFix in the US quotes USD 450 for a mail-in repair. A 0 km replacement cluster is the alternative when the repair shop cannot get the unit or when the owner does not want a week without the car. Like every Audi cluster since 2017, a replacement needs Component Protection removal in an ODIS online session after fitting; SFD does not apply to the pre-facelift Q7.
Facelift from 2020: different numbers
The 2020 facelift moved the Q7 and the Q8 onto the C8 cluster generation: 4K0 920 790 x for petrol, diesel and mild-hybrid cars and 4K0 920 794 x for the plug-in hybrids. A 4M0 cluster does not fit a facelift car and vice versa. Our 4K0 index covers those numbers.
Questions
Which cluster does a 2017 Q7 without adaptive cruise use?
4M0 920 770 or 770 A/B/C in km/h markets, 4M0 920 870 in the US. With adaptive cruise the number changes to 771 (km/h) or 880 (mph).
Can I swap the analogue Q7 cluster for a Virtual Cockpit?
Only with the 4M0 920 790 family and the matching wiring, steering wheel controls and MMI navigation plus. It is a bigger job than on the A4 B9 and is usually done by retrofit specialists.
Does a used Q7 cluster need coding?
Yes. Every 2017+ cluster carries Component Protection and must be released in an ODIS online session, at a dealer or through our remote service.
