Audi A6 C8, A7 C8, Q7 facelift and Q8 instrument cluster part numbers: 4K0 920 790 and 794 explained

From 2018 the A6 C8 and A7 C8 moved to a new 12.3" Virtual Cockpit that Audi later carried over to the facelifted Q7 (2020) and the Q8. The part numbers start with 4K0 920, the C8 platform prefix, even when the cluster sits in a Q7 or Q8. Two families exist side by side and are easy to confuse.
790 or 794: it depends on the drivetrain

The 794 cluster has the hybrid-specific displays (electric range, charge state, power meter) and does not fit a conventional car. Listings that describe a 794 unit as 'A6 C8 cluster' without mentioning the hybrid are the most common cause of wrong-part returns on this platform. Bosch reference numbers help when the Audi label is damaged: 0263749045 is a 790 B, 0263749206 is a 794 E.

Software index and Audi's SW 60 update
Audi of America technical bulletin 2070332 (May 2023) covers model-year 2021 A6, A7, Q7 and Q8 with clusters 4K0 920 790 E, 794 E, 890 E and 894 E: units shipped with software 55 to 59 are updated to software 60, which fixes the turn-signal sound behaviour. A 794 E showing SW 0059 is therefore the last pre-update state and any dealer can flash it during coding. Owners of 2020 Q8 cars report HW 24 / SW 53 on their original clusters, which shows how far the index moved within two model years.
Component Protection and SFD
All C8-platform clusters carry Component Protection and show SAFE CP until an ODIS online session marries them to the car. On top of that, cars from around model year 2020 use SFD (Schutz Fahrzeug Diagnose), which requires an online token before the cluster can be coded at all. A workshop that can clear CP but has no SFD access cannot finish a 2021 A6. Tell us the VIN before ordering and we confirm whether our remote session can complete both steps for your car.

Does 4K0 920 790 B fit a Q7?
Yes, the facelift Q7 and SQ7 from 2020 and the Q8 use the same 4K0 920 790 family as the A6 and A7 C8. The pre-facelift Q7 (2016–2019) uses 4M0 920 7xx numbers instead.
Can a 794 hybrid cluster be coded into a normal A6?
No. The hybrid cluster expects the hybrid control units on the bus and will not behave correctly in a conventional or mild-hybrid car.
What does SW 0059 on a 794 E mean for me?
It is the model-year 2021 software before Audi's SW 60 update. Coding works as normal; the dealer can apply the update in the same session if you want the revised turn-signal sound.
