Audi A8 D5 (2018 onwards) Virtual Cockpit part numbers: 4N0 920 790 A to H, what the suffixes mean, and what to know before replacing one

The D5-generation A8 (type 4N, from model year 2018) uses a 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit with a chrome bezel that is unique to the model. Part numbers start with 4N0 920 790 for km/h markets and 4N0 920 890 for North America. Because the A8 sells in small numbers, used clusters are rare and priced accordingly, and an Audi warranty programme covers many of the failures that drive replacements.

The A8 shares its chassis codes 4N2 (standard wheelbase) and 4N8 (long wheelbase); the cluster is the same for both.
The B200049 fault, extended warranty and recall
Clusters built by Bosch before August 2024 for the D5 have an internal cable defect that produces fault B200049, 'instrument cluster: malfunction', with the display going dark or restarting. Audi issued technical bulletin 2068380 in November 2022, extended the cluster warranty to eight years, and in April 2025 opened recall campaign VC90 with software 0065. If your car is inside the extended warranty, the dealer replaces the cluster free of charge; a used replacement only makes sense for cars outside it, accident repairs, or owners who cannot wait for the dealer's parts allocation.
Component Protection and SFD
Every D5 cluster is protected by Component Protection and needs an ODIS online session after fitting. The D5 was one of the first models with SFD, so cars from model year 2020 onwards also need an SFD token before the cluster can be coded. A 2017-production 4N0 920 790 A is pre-SFD hardware; whether the session needs SFD depends on the car it goes into. Send the VIN and we tell you before you pay.

Check the extended warranty first: Audi covers this fault for eight years on affected units and runs recall VC90. Outside that, a replacement cluster plus CP removal is the fix.
Which suffix fits a 2018 A8?
4N0 920 790 A for km/h markets. Later suffixes generally code back to 2018 cars, but the software index has to be checked against the VIN.
Is the A8 cluster the same as the A6 C8 cluster?
No. The A8 uses 4N0 920 790 with its own bezel and layout; the A6, A7, Q7 facelift and Q8 use 4K0 920 790.
